Most women have their second appointment around three months after their first appointment, with further follow-up appointments advised by your clinician based on your individual needs. Please note that to continue receiving a prescription from us, an annual review appointment is required. If it has been over two years since your last visit, you will need to rebook an initial appointment. Click here to book an appointment.

Your first consultation lasts up to 45 minutes, with follow-up consultations lasting up to 25 minutes.

No, you can book an appointment without a referral from your GP or another doctor.

Yes, we are able to see patients who reside outside the United Kingdom, Channel Islands or the Isle of Man following a first appointment, but the first appointment must be face-to-face in one of our clinics. This doesn’t currently apply to residents of the US and Canada.

Blood tests can offer valuable insights into your health, including hormone levels and other key markers. While they are not always necessary for diagnosing perimenopause or menopause, for some women, testing hormone levels can help guide treatment decisions.

Beyond perimenopause and menopause care, blood tests can be part of a general health check, such as vitamin levels, thyroid function, and metabolic health. They can also help identify conditions that may mimic or worsen perimenopausal or menopausal symptoms, ensuring you receive the right treatment for your long-term health.

We prioritise accuracy and reliability, which is why we take blood from a vein rather than using finger-prick tests, which may not always provide dependable results - particularly for measuring oestradiol (the primary form of oestrogen).

Timing is usually not usually critical. However, your clinician will advise you if you need to have them at a specific time in your menstrual cycle.

Blood tests are available at various locations across the UK as well as at your home. Our team will help you to make the necessary arrangements. Please note that there will be a fee payable directly to the centre or service provider where your blood sample is taken

Your appointment should take around 15 minutes. A phlebotomist will collect your sample and ensure you feel comfortable throughout the process

Oestrogen gels
‍You should not apply gel to your arms on the morning before your blood test, whether the blood test is in the morning or the afternoon. You can apply gels to your legs before a blood test but must ensure that you wash your hands thoroughly to avoid the transfer of oestrogen gel to your arms.

Oestrogen patches
‍You should apply your patches in the usual way before a blood test. There is no need to change the schedule of application of patches, or the timing of application of patches prior to a blood test.

Oestrogen sprays
‍You should apply your spray to the lower part of your arms prior to your blood test whether the blood test is in the morning or the afternoon.

Progesterone tablets
‍You should continue to take your progesterone tablets as normal the night before a blood test. There is no need to change to the timing or schedule of the progesterone dose before your blood test.

Oestrogen/progesterone combination patches
‍Combination patches such as Evorel Conti or Evorel Sequi should be applied as normal before a blood test. There is no need to change the timing or schedule of the application of these patches before a blood test.

Testosterone creams and gels
‍You should apply your testosterone gel or cream to the outer thighs, lower abdomen or bottom as usual on the day of their blood test. You should ensure that you wash your hands well to avoid the transfer of testosterone cream or gel to your arms.

If in you normally apply testosterone gel or cream to your arms, then you should apply it on your legs on the morning of the blood test if you usually use testosterone in the mornings. You should use your testosterone cream or gel at the usual time the following day.

Vaginal pessaries and creams
‍Vaginal oestrogen and DHEA (Intrarosa) pessaries, and vaginal oestrogen creams can be inserted into the vagina or used externally to the vulval area prior to a blood test as normal. If vaginal oestrogen cream is applied in the morning before a blood test, you should wash your hands thoroughly after application to avoid the transfer of any oestrogen cream to the arms.

Feeling anxious about blood tests can be completely normal. Let your phlebotomist know in advance, and they will take extra care to help you feel at ease.

A Full Blood Count (FBC) checks the number and types of red and white blood cells. It helps assess general health and identify issues like anemia or infections.

Follow these simple steps to ensure the most accurate results:

a)   Stay well-hydrated- Drinking plenty of water before your test makes it easier to draw blood.

b)   Fasting is not usually required- You can eat and drink as usual.

c)   Continue your HRT as normal, unless advised otherwise by your clinician.

If you use HRT gels or creams, avoid applying them to your arms on the day of the test to prevent sample contamination.

Once processed, your blood test results will be sent to your clinician at Newson Clinic, they will review your results and email you with any relevant comment.

• Results, including a comment from your clinician, typically take up to 10 days.
• If you have not received them within two weeks, please contact us to check their status.

If you have a follow-up appointment scheduled imminently, your clinician may discuss your results during your consultation instead of via email

TgAb can indicate autoimmune thyroid disease and may suggest a higher risk of developing thyroid dysfunction.

Thyroid Peroxidase (TPOAb) is tested to check for autoimmune thyroid conditions such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, or Graves’ disease which can cause hypothyroidism.

A thyroid function test measures TSH, T4, and T3 to check for overactive or underactive thyroid conditions.

FAI is calculated using SHBG and testosterone levels to estimate how much active testosterone is available in your body.

SHBG is a protein which binds to sex hormones in your blood, affecting how much testosterone and oestrogen are available for use. Measuring SHBG helps assess hormonal balance.

Testosterone is a female hormone that supports libido, mood, concentration, energy, bone, and muscle strength. Levels decline with age, and testing can guide treatment.

Oestradiol is the commonest and most beneficial form of oestrogen and is important for symptom control in perimenopause and menopause. It also supports bone, heart, and brain health.

TC:HDL is the ratio of HDL to total cholesterol. During perimenopause and menopause, cholesterol levels, especially LDL levels, often rise as lipid metabolism slows. HRT can help by lowering LDL cholesterol and increasing HDL cholesterol.

HDL (‘good’ cholesterol) helps remove excess cholesterol from your blood, while LDL (‘bad’ cholesterol) can build up in arteries and increase heart disease risk.

Lipids include cholesterol and triglycerides, which are essential for building hormones and cells. However, imbalanced lipid levels can increase the risk of heart disease.

HbA1c reflects average blood sugar levels over the past few months. It helps diagnose diabetes and prediabetes and can guide lifestyle changes to reduce future risk.

Your liver plays important roles in hormone balance, protein production, and detoxification. This test measures ALT, ALP, AST, GGT, bilirubin, and albumin to assess liver health.

This test measures creatinine, urea, and eGFR to assess how well your kidneys filter waste and regulate important chemicals in the body.

Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium for strong bones and supports your immune function. Many people have low vitamin D levels, particularly in winter. Vitamin D can also help control infections and reduce inflammation.
