What does this blood test measure?

Hormones

  • Estradiol: the main form of estrogen used in hormone treatment
  • Testosterone: a hormone involved in areas including energy, cognition, muscle health and sexual wellbeing
  • SHBG: a protein that binds to hormones such as testosterone

Thyroid function

  • TSH: helps regulate thyroid hormone production
  • T4: one of the main hormones produced by the thyroid
  • T3: the active thyroid hormone involved in functions including energy and metabolism

Read more about how estrogen, progesterone and testosterone work here.

Who may benefit from this blood test?

This test may be clinically useful if you:

  • Are considering or currently using hormone treatment
  • Continue to experience symptoms of despite treatment
  • Require monitoring of estradiol or testosterone levels
  • Have symptoms that could also be associated with thyroid function
  • Take thyroid medication and require monitoring

Blood tests are not required for every patient and should not be interpreted in isolation.

If you use hormone treatment, Dr Louise explains more about blood testing and monitoring in hormone treatment doses explained here.

How can the results support your treatment?

‍A comprehensive female hormone and thyroid check typically involves blood tests to assess thyroid function and can also include other hormone tests to evaluate a woman's reproductive health and overall endocrine balance, which are particularly relevant given the higher prevalence of thyroid issues in women and their impact on the menstrual cycle, fertility, and menopause.

Preparing for your blood test

Continue taking your usual medication unless advised otherwise.

Tell the team about any medication, hormone treatment or supplements you use, as you may be given specific instructions before your test.
