Ultrasound scans at Newson Clinic can help investigate persistent or unusual vaginal bleeding and assess the womb, womb lining and ovaries.
Bleeding can be a common side effect when you first start or change hormone treatment. However, persistent, heavy or unusual vaginal bleeding during perimenopause or after menopause should be assessed.
Registered Newson Clinic patients can be referred for a detailed ultrasound scan of the womb and ovaries at Winton House, our Stratford-upon-Avon clinic. The findings can help your clinician understand what may be causing the bleeding and determine whether any further investigation or changes to your treatment are needed.
Your scan will be carried out by an experienced sonographer and may involve an abdominal ultrasound, an internal ultrasound or both, depending on what is clinically appropriate.
An ultrasound can provide useful information about the womb, womb lining and ovaries. It may help to:
In many cases, the scan provides reassurance that no concerning changes have been identified. Your Newson Clinic clinician will review the report alongside your symptoms, medical history and current hormone treatment. They can then advise whether your treatment should remain the same or be adjusted.
Occasionally, the findings may indicate that further assessment is needed. Your clinician will explain the results and, where appropriate, arrange or recommend a referral to gynaecology.
The preparation required will depend on the type of ultrasound you are having. You may be asked to attend with a full bladder for part of the examination.
